We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated postdocs to join the Integrative Epidemiology Team (IET) at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France. Ideal candidates will have training in biostatistics, epidemiology, and/or genomics and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

The IET is embedded in the Genomic Epidemiology Branch (GEM) and focuses on conducting cutting-edge research that informs (1) primary prevention by advancing our understanding of cancer etiology and (2) secondary prevention by optimizing early detection strategies. We use approaches that integrate molecular, epidemiological, and clinical data from large observational studies. An important feature of our work is to develop collaborative projects with investigators from around the world. Examples of such initiatives include the Opioid Cohort Consortium (OPICO) and the Lung Cancer Cohort Consortium (LC3). The OPICO consortium aims to elucidate the long-term health consequences of opioid use and involves 11 prospective cohort studies from Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and the USA. The LC3 consortium aims to develop biomarker- and questionnaire-based early detection tools for lung cancer. The LC3 involves over 24 prospective cohort studies from around the world which comprise 3,000,000 research participants and 70,000 lung cancer cases.

We are looking for talented postdoctoral candidates with some experience in conducting epidemiological studies, but with specific expertise in at least one of the following areas: biostatistics, genetics or genomics, risk prediction, longitudinal data analysis, polygenic risk scores, and Mendelian randomization. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, be self-motivated and independent, and have a good command of spoken and written English.
The IET team currently includes 10 members from 10 countries, including 2 co-leads, early career scientists, technicians, and administrators. Our objective is to train early career scientists in key aspects of cancer research, strengthen their research portfolios with first-author publications, and equip them with the tools and experience that are necessary to lead successful careers in cancer research. To do this, we foster a collaborative environment in which team members support each other’s research and training without competing internally. Beyond regular project meetings, we meet regularly as a team to discuss broader topics and to ensure everyone’s well-being and well-rounded development. We also organize retreats and social activities. IET members work closely with investigators across the GEM branch and IARC, and have opportunities to leverage the vast genetic and genomic resources available.

We plan to add two postdoctoral scientists to the IET team before June 2023. The postdoctoral opportunity is initially for one year with the expectation of renewal. The IARC postdoctoral stipend is € 2,950 per month net. The cost of travel for the postdoctoral scientist will be covered. Dependence and health insurance allowances will be paid, if applicable. Applications from nationals from low- and middle-income countries are encouraged. IARC welcomes around 40 postdoctoral scientists, at any one time, distributed across its research branches.
